OUR LADY OF MERCY MEDICAL CENTER PLANS NEW STATE OF THE ART CANCER
TREATMENT AND RESEARCH FACILITY
New
Ambulatory Oncology Service To Be Named For David Francis D'Urso
Bronx,
New York.....A new not-for-profit comprehensive cancer treatment
and research facility is being developed for the comprehensive Cancer
Center at Our lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx, New York.
The proposed new state-of-the-art facility will house an ambulatory
care services for cancer patients to be named The David Francis
D'Urso Ambulatory Oncology Service, medical and community cancer
education facilities and clinical research units. The modern high-tech
Cancer Center to be built at an estimated cost of $18 million, will
be a six-story, 60,000 square foot structure, located on the existing
campus, with parking and a walkway to the main hospital for direct
access for patients and their families. This will physically connect
the building with the Cancer Center's in-patient unit, and bone
marrow transplant unit located with in the main hospital building.
Over 8,000 patients are expected to be treated annually at the new
Cancer Center. "We are delighted that philanthropist Florence
D'Urso has just announced that she is making us a significant gift
for our to our Cancer Center. In recognition of Ms. D'Urso's generosity
Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center will be naming our ambulatory care
service in memory of her son David Francis D'Urso who died from
leukemia. It will be The David Francis D'Urso Ambulatory Oncology
Service. We plan to combine the latest advances in the treatment
and care of cancer patients with research capabilities that are
on the cutting-edge, all located in a premier-class facility,"
said Gary S. Horan, FACHE, president and chief executive officer
of Our Lady of Mercy Healthcare System. The director of the Cancer
Center is Peter H. Wiernik, MD. Dr. Wiernik's career spans more
than 30 years in cancer treatment and research, and he has earned
national and international recognition for his work in the diagnosis.
