THE
SHEWARD PARTNERSHIP DESIGNS NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART
MEDICAL OFFICE BUILDING FOR NAZARETH HOSPITAL IN PHILADELPHIA
Architects
Create Patient Friendly and Neighborhood Compatible Medical Office
Facility
The Sheward
Partnership, one of the nation's leading architectural firms with
headquarters in Philadelphia, has designed Nazareth Hospital's New
State-of-the-Art Medical Office Building as part of the hospital's
expansion of their Northeast Philadelphia Hospital Campus.
"We have
designed Nazareth Hospital's new medical office building to correspond
with the surrounding environment in which the hospital is situated,"
said David Scheuermann, Principal of The Sheward Partnership. "The
building is composed primarily of a long, horizontal façade
which faces Roosevelt Boulevard, and acts as a backdrop for the
Nazareth Hospital and Rothman Institute Orthopaedics logos. The
building's other façade on Fairfield street, is designed
with vertical elements in order to be sensitive to and correspond
with the residential housing in the neighborhood.
"Rothman
Institute Orthopaedics, is a world-renowned orthopaedic facility
and therefore we designed the building's exterior and interior with
patients in mind," noted Scheuermann. "We achieved this
by designing a generous, canopied, patient drop off and pick up
area with curb cuts to ease the path from car to building; extra
large elevators for easy wheel chair access; wider hallways to better
accommodate the needs of patients; and careful arrangement and design
of space to assure ease of passage throughout the building. These
patient friendly touches were designed for the many patients who
come to the Rothman Institute Orthopaedics for hip and knee replacements
and other orthopaedic problems."

Partnership/Nazareth Hospital
The 21, 000
square - foot new medical office building is spilt into two floors.
The first floor houses a Magnetic Resonance Imaging suite (MRI)
along with physician offices while the second floor houses offices
for Orthopedic surgeons from the Rothman Institute Orthopaedics,
on-site physical therapy facilities and radiography. The building
also includes medical practices in cardiology, family practice,
neurology as well as a respiratory and sleep medicine institute.
The building
has high visibility along Roosevelt Boulevard, a busy, commercially-zoned
district, and also intersects Holme Avenue, a residential neighborhood.
For the commercial side, The Sheward Partnership designed a breathtaking
glass stairway, that is fully illuminated at night, a beacon drawing
attention to Rothman Institute Orthopadeics and Nazareth Hospital
signage. In deference to the side facing the residential neighborhood,
the building was scaled down in terms of elevation, giving careful
consideration toward appearance, color and landscaping. From an
architectural perspective, the building was designed from the inside
out. This allowed the architects, when considering the structure
of the building, to use a cantilevering design, where the second
floor is larger than the first, thus masking obvious forms of support
such as columns. The overall result, a modern medical building that
is notably neighborhood-compatible and in its entirety, forms the
"front door" to the Nazareth Hospital complex.
" Our
patient - friendly design efforts," said Tom DiBenedetto Project
Manager, The Sheward Partnership, "also included a well - landscaped
site and wide sidewalks outside. Upon entering the building, patients
are greeted by automatic opening doors and a naturally lit corridor,
providing a cheerful, welcoming experience. The building is very
uplifting and inviting for both patients and medical personnel."
"The opening
of this state-of-the-art medical office building is possible because
extraordinary people from both Nazareth Hospital and Rothman Institute
Orthopaedics possess a common vision to provide exceptional healthcare
to our community," stated Patricia DeAngelis, President and
CEO of Nazareth Hospital. " We are thrilled to provide our
neighbors with a broad range of easily accessible, convenient services.
This building is truly an expression of the dedication of Nazareth
Hospital and Rothman Institute Orthopaedics to this community."
The Sheward Partnership/Nazareth Hospital
"Rothman
Institute Orthopaedics prides itself on providing the highest quality
care to its patients," said Rothman Institute Orthopaedics
Chairman Richard H. Rothman, M.D., Ph.D. "Our partnership with
Nazareth Hospital speaks to the shared attention to quality and
excellence," added Rothman. These thoughts were echoed by William
J. Hozack, M.D., Director for the Center for Orthopaedic Excellence
at Nazareth Hospital. "The relationship of Rothman Institute
Orthopaedics and Nazareth Hospital in this world-class facility
will truly benefit the surrounding community," stated Hozack.
